How the Part B Late Enrollment Penalty Works
10% Per 12-Month Period
For each full 12-month period you could have had Part B but didn't sign up, your premium increases by 10%. Wait 3 years? That's a 30% penalty.
Permanent & Growing
The penalty never goes away. And because it's a percentage of the premium, it grows every year as Medicare premiums increase.
VA Coverage Doesn't Count
VA health benefits are NOT considered "creditable coverage" for Medicare Part B. Only employer-sponsored group health insurance counts.
SSDI Recipients: Penalty Resets at 65
If you got Medicare before 65 through SSDI and delay Part B, you'll have a penalty during those years. However, when you turn 65, the penalty completely resets to zero.
