Our story

Why we work with veterans

Veterans Advantage Financial® was founded by Christopher Duncan. His father, Wallace Duncan, is a Vietnam-era veteran who has Medicare alongside his VA benefits.

Helping his dad sort out the VA, Medicare and everything in between showed Christopher a pattern he still sees every day: veterans often get Medicare advice built for civilians. That advice can overlook VA health care, TRICARE For Life, CHAMPVA and how a disability rating changes the picture.

That’s what We Speak Veteran® means. Our team learns your world, from VA priority groups to TRICARE For Life, so you don’t have to translate your situation for someone who’s never heard of it.

Medicare doesn’t replace your VA benefits. The two can work side by side, and we explain how before you make any decision.

Christopher is a Retirement Income Certified Professional®. Medicare rules keep products like annuities out of Medicare appointments[1], so these are always a separate conversation.

How we work with you

A short phone call, at your pace. No obligation at any step.

  1. You call or book a time. Call 888-960-VETS (8387) or pick a time online.
  2. We agree on what to cover. Before discussing specific Medicare Advantage or Part D plans, Medicare requires a Scope of Appointment that records the topics you want to talk about[1]. It isn’t an enrollment form.
  3. We learn your situation. Your VA or TRICARE coverage, your doctors and pharmacy, your prescriptions, your budget and your health needs.
  4. We compare and explain. Before any enrollment, Medicare requires us to go over whether your doctors and pharmacy are in the plan’s network, whether your prescriptions are covered and what they cost, premiums, benefits and other costs[2]. We explain trade-offs like networks, prior authorization and copays in plain English.
  5. You decide. Keeping what you have is always an option. If you choose a plan, we help you enroll and stay available for questions.
Transparency

How we’re paid

You don’t pay us for our help. If you enroll in a plan through us, the insurance company pays us a commission. For Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare sets limits on what agents can be paid, and it bars charging people marketing consulting fees[2].

A Medicare Advantage plan’s premium and cost-sharing can’t vary among members of the same plan (or plan segment)[3], so working with an agent doesn’t change what you pay for that plan.

Who we represent

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Our national 2027 inventory includes 10 organizations and 3,836 products. The number available to you depends on your location and eligibility. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to get information on all of your options.

Medicare requires agencies that sell plans for more than one company to show this on their websites[4]. For free, unbiased one-on-one counseling, you can also contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program[5].

When you call, you talk with a licensed agent. Ask any agent for their National Producer Number (NPN) and check it with NIPR[6].

How we create our content

Our articles and guides are published under Christopher Duncan’s name, and he’s responsible for what we publish. If something is presented as fact, it should point to its source.

  • Primary sources first. The Medicare & You handbook, Medicare.gov, CMS, VA.gov, TRICARE.mil, SSA.gov and federal regulations, with numbered citations.
  • Dated and updated. Pages show when they were last updated, and we revise them when yearly amounts or rules change.
  • Education, not personal advice. Your options and costs depend on your county, your plan and your benefits. Plan details come from each plan’s Summary of Benefits and Evidence of Coverage.
  • Tools we use. We use software tools, including AI, to help research, draft and check pages against the sources they cite.
  • Corrections. If something looks wrong or out of date, call 888-960-VETS and tell us. We’ll check it against the source and fix it.

Questions about us

Is Veterans Advantage Financial® part of the VA or Medicare?

No. Veterans Advantage Financial® is a private, licensed insurance agency. We are not connected with or endorsed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Medicare, CMS, TRICARE, the Department of Defense or any other government agency.

Do you charge for your help?

No. You don’t pay us a fee. If you enroll in a plan through us, the insurance company pays us a commission. Medicare rules say people considering a Medicare Advantage plan can’t be charged marketing consulting fees[2].

Do you offer every Medicare plan in my area?

No. We do not offer every plan available in your area. For information on all of your options, contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), or your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP)[4][5].

Will a Medicare plan change my VA health care?

VA says, “Whether or not you have health insurance coverage doesn’t affect the VA health care benefits you can get,” and it encourages veterans to sign up for Medicare as soon as they can[8]. A Medicare plan has its own rules for networks, approvals and costs, so we walk through how the two work side by side. See VA health care and Medicare.

Can you help if I have TRICARE For Life?

Yes. TRICARE For Life requires Medicare Part A and Part B[9]. We explain how Medicare and TRICARE For Life work together and what changes if you consider a Medicare Advantage plan. See TRICARE For Life and Medicare.

Which states do you work in?

The agency is licensed to sell insurance in all 50 states, and Christopher Duncan is licensed in all 50 states and Washington, DC. We work with clients by phone, wherever they live.

How can I check your license?

Use the National Insurance Producer Registry with our agency NPN (21076808) or an agent’s own NPN, such as Christopher Duncan’s (8613503)[6]. State license numbers are listed on our licenses page.

Do I have to enroll if I call?

No. Calling or booking a time doesn’t obligate you to anything. Before we discuss specific Medicare Advantage or Part D plans, Medicare requires us to agree on and record a Scope of Appointment listing the topics you want to cover[1]. It isn’t an enrollment form.
