Medicare Part B Late Enrollment Penalty Calculator
Estimate how delaying Part B could affect your premium. If you owe a penalty, Medicare generally charges it while you have Part B; some people qualify for an exception.
VA health care by itself does not protect you from a Part B late-enrollment penalty. A Special Enrollment Period may apply with qualifying group health plan coverage based on current employment, including employer, union, spouse, or family-member coverage. Confirm your situation with Medicare or Social Security.
*Estimate only. This calculator uses the 2026 standard Part B premium and does not calculate income-related premiums (IRMAA), Special Enrollment Periods, Medicare Savings Programs, coverage gaps, or other eligibility exceptions. Premiums and rules can change; verify your personal amount with Medicare or Social Security.
How the Part B Late Enrollment Penalty Works
10% Per 12-Month Period
For each full 12-month period you could have had Part B but didn't sign up, your premium increases by 10%. Wait 3 years? That's a 30% penalty.
Permanent & Growing
If you owe a Part B late-enrollment penalty, Medicare generally adds it to your monthly premium for as long as you have Part B. Premium amounts can change each year; some people qualify for a Special Enrollment Period or Medicare Savings Program and may avoid a penalty.
VA Coverage Doesn't Count
VA health care by itself does not protect you from a Part B late-enrollment penalty. Qualifying current-employment group health coverage may create a Special Enrollment Period; eligibility is fact-specific, so confirm before relying on this estimate.
If you qualify through disability and later reach 65
If you qualify for Medicare because of disability and later reach 65, your Part B enrollment and any penalty can be governed by a new Initial Enrollment Period and other rules. Do not rely on this calculator alone; confirm your exact status with Social Security or 1-800-MEDICARE.
